A Japanese couple, once, in the 90’s wanted a child. They had tried for many years and after hearing about a temple in Bhutan that was known for fertility blessings and was said to have solved such situations on various occasions in the past, decided to visit this temple in Bhutan in the hopes of being blessed with a child. They did this and, to their surprise, found out that they were expecting shortly after returning from their visit. Many years had passed and they decided to return to the place they had received their blessing with their beloved child. They booked the same tour with the same agent and requested all the same arrangements in order to share their experience with their child. Shortly after arriving the bus driver glanced at the child and said “oh, what a beautiful child! he looks just like your guide!”
Hahahaha lol no, ok, just kidding, it’s a joke a friend of mine in Bhutan once told me haha, still laughing about it today…
All jokes aside, when I was in Bhutan I was told about a monastery, which truly had been constructed for the sole purpose of fertility. It is here where you also are able to seek a blessing for this purpose from the local Buddhist priest. The monastery is called the Chimi Lhakhang, translated into english as the “Temple of the ‘Divine Madman'”. I found the name funny and the story behind it is indeed kind of funny, Lama Drukpa Kuenley was the real name of the Divine Madman, a Buddhist Master that lived in the 1500’s and quite the character, was well-known for his interests and style of teachings, which often was considered… how shall I say, perhaps slightly inappropriate. ^_^;;

I was very surprised when I first arrived at this place, which, oddly enough, became my favourite place to visit in Bhutan, with exception of Trongzha, the former capital located high in the mountains. It was the late afternoon/early evening and the scenery and atmosphere was absolutely unbelievable. The grass, the most amazing hue of green I had ever experienced, the valley beautifully covered in this colour and the monastery, located solely a top the hill radiated this silent, lonely sense of tranquility. All photos which I took on this location turned out just as vibrant and didn’t need any form of touch up, whatsoever. In fact, to do so, would have been a disgrace, so vibrant are the colours (you know how when you take a photo on your Samsung Galaxy and are thrilled by the vibrant, amazing colours only to be disappointed when uploading and then viewing these on any other screen? Well, the photos are like that, only have just as lovely a colour on other screens as they did on the camera). You might notice on your visit to Bhutan that there are Phallus’ everywhere. Now you’re probably thinking WHAT?!? Did I read that right?!? Haha not literally; however, you will see them painted on the walls of many households and find carved ones on many a rooftop as decoration. This is not some strange thing, in Bhutan, fertility is treated as very important and for this reason a building may be decorated with such an image or statue, as a kind of blessing.
